Breast Biopsy

We perform stereotactic, ultrasound, and MRI guided breast biopsies in the convenience of an outpatient setting.

Breast Biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure that utilizes image guidance tools for precise needle placement. The different guidance methods provide flexibility for the radiologist to best visualize the area of interest. After the needle is removed from the breast, a biopsy marker (clip) is placed at the site to assist with future procedures, ongoing monitoring, and follow-up imaging. Once the biopsy is obtained, the tissue sample is submitted to a pathologist for examination. At TGH Imaging, patients can expect guidance and support from our expertly trained technologists and board-certified, subspecialized radiologists throughout the biopsy procedure.

MRI Guided Breast Biopsy

During an MRI guided breast biopsy, the Radiologist will use magnetic resonance imaging to guide a needle into the suspicious area to remove a tissue sample. The biopsy procedure is ordered when the area of concern is not well seen on a mammogram or ultrasound and only seen on an MRI of the breast. Small breast lesions that are not visible on other imaging studies are made visible with an MRI by using contrast.

Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy

During an Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy, ultrasound images assist the radiologist in guiding a needle directly into the mass to remove a tissue sample. Ultrasound-guided biopsy prevents the need to remove tissue surgically, eliminates radiation exposure, and effectively evaluates lumps under the arm or near the chest wall.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

Stereotactic breast biopsy or x-ray guided breast biopsy uses multiple coordinates to precisely determine the location of a tumor or nodule so that a tissue sample can be obtained. The procedure is performed by a radiologist with the latest state-of-the-art stereotactic technology designed to improve the quality, accuracy, and ease of breast biopsies. This guidance technique provides a highly effective means of evaluating calcium deposits or small masses, delivering results as accurate as those from a more invasive surgical biopsy.
